There's something for everyone all year round at this delightful coastal reserve sitting on the Ribble estuary within sight of Southport pier. In the spring you can see brown hares boxing in the fields, while in the early summer you'll spot nesting birds like avocets and lapwings. During the winter months the skies fill with visiting waterfowl such as pink-footed geese and wigeons, not to mention birds of prey that can set flocks wheeling over the marshes. There are two hides, a viewing platform and three viewing screens. Beginners' assistance is on offer - please contact RSPB Marshside for details.

Amongst a wide range of premier golf tournaments, The Royal Birkdale Golf Club regularly plays host to the PGA Open Golf Championship, The Ladies' Open and British Seniors Open thanks to the impressive links course that has established Birkdale amongst the very best golf courses throughout the world. Some say a better golf course than it's adjacent neighbour The Royal Birkdale, Hillside Golf Club offers Championship standard links golf to visiting golfers of a good standard. Whilst many British seaside piers have crumbled in neglect, Southport Pier was first opened in 1860 and not only remains sound, but a popular destination for Southport visitors and residents alike. Proud to be Britain's oldest iron pier and also its second longest, Southport Pier runs 1,112 metres (1,216 yards in old money) from the Promenade, over King's Gardens and the Marine Lake and out into the Irish Sea. The Pier entrance is watched-over by Silcock's wonderful Golden Gallopers carousel and for a small fee, a clean, contemporary tram will transport the weary-legged along the pier's full length.

Time your visit to this amazing outdoor attraction during low or tuning tide. Crosby Beach lies approximately 30 minutes by train from Southport and hosts 100 iron figures cast from the artists' own bodies then erected over a 3km area.
